PLAYERS FONDEST MEMORIES

“I love being in the MID-TAC environment with a great group of people and playing with my partners, Lefty, John and Sheryl against great teams like Ed and Ivy; Bill and Hattie; Ethel and Marc; Howard & Marc and Arveal and James T.”

Lee Smith, Glenn Dale, MD

“Hanging out with Ted Cruzat at MID-TAC back in the day.”

Ethel Parker, Toledo, OH

“When me and my partner, Wilton Kent, beat Cliff Devine and his partner, George Rios, in men’s 35 Doubles.”

Charles Neal, Chicago, IL

“Daryl Whitley (junior tennis phenom) started playing and I became one of his coaches.”

Carl Mimms, Tampa, FL (previously Indianapolis)

“Coming to MID-TAC knowing it was a big tournament and being able to beat James Fields of Kansas City in the finals.”

Phil Lucas, Capital Heights, MD

“Had to play my friend, Warren Stewart from New Orleans but had to get Richard Bradley to come out and call the lines so Stewart quit!”

Ollen Dupree, Bowie, MD

“Match of my career was a battle/war between me and my partner, Marc Barber and Rodney Stennis and Riddell. It was a 3 setter that went 3 to 4 hours and we all came off just hugging each other. We won the match!”

Howard Bolling, Chicago, Illinois

“Couldn’t get enough guys to play baseball so a guy bought me a tennis racquet from Walgreens and I started playing. Been playing since 1981.”

Jack Barton, Beecher, IL

“Started playing tennis with my brother, Jack, and then left tennis for racket ball. I then came back and been back since 1983.”

Chris Barton, Harvey, IL

“Playing the Open Division in the MID-TAC Tournament in the late 60’s against Maurice Hunter, Detroit, MI; Al Matthews, Columbus, OH, Ed Cruzat, Chicago, IL and remembering how much I needed to go home and practice. I would always ask for the balls so I could practice after the match.
“

Marc Barber, Louisville, KY

“1st day as Tournament Director it rained every day and we were at 4/5 different sites.I recall last match giving winners their trophies and them appreciating it and staff sticking around to the end.”

Edwin Amos, Columbus, OH
